Learning to Sail--Little Traverse Sailors

June-August

A wonderful way for kids to enjoy their summer in Northern Michigan is on the water learning to sail. Youth sailing is a major activity Up North and in Harbor Springs today as it has been for generations.

Little Traverse Sailors (LTS) is a non profit organization that has been teaching children to sail for nearly 60 years. The nine-week program begins each June and runs through August with morning and afternoon sessions. Young sailors partake in sailing weeks where they learn the skills necessary to enjoy the sport of sailing as well as racing. LTS operates on the shore of the harbor in Harbor Springs at the Little Traverse Yacht Club (LTYC) on Bay Street. The sailors learn to sail in Lasers, 420s, Bugs, and J/70s. The sailing school is a rite of summer in Harbor Springs. Summer visitors and residents love to watch the kids race along the water. Every Wednesday is picnic day and the sailing students zip over to the beach on Harbor Point for a picnic.

As the sailors gain skills, they can advance to the LTS Race Team or Junior Race Team. With "big boat" sailing a huge part of LTYC's summer season, many of the Junior Racers have the chance to sail on these boats for weekly races on Little Traverse Bay.

Sailing as part of LTS has lead many local youth to compete at the college level and beyond. Sailing is a life skill sport, one that that can be enjoyed throughout life. And there is no better place to begin this sport as a child than Little Traverse Sailors.

LTS also offers private sailing lessons for children and adults as well as an adult learn (or relearn!) to sail program. Need to tune up your sailing skills? LTS can help! LTS is a charitable organization operating at LTYC and all sessions are open to the public. While LTS is located on the LTYC waterfront, LTYC membership is not required to take part in sailing school or lessons.
